#Storyofmylife is a documentary photography project that was born from an idea that Prof Derrick Swartz, Vice Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University, had within the context of #Feesmustfall in October 2015.

We wanted to tell the story of the university as a visual narrative, with specific focus on the “access” theme – students who are confronted with and negotiate various challenges in accessing the university.

The project portrays and photographically documents eight students in their personal spaces, giving a glimpse into their lived experience. Through telling these stories, I wanted to maximize the contribution of the students as part of the process of their portrayal, providing them with the opportunity of projecting their own “voice” by means of handwritten notes to accompany the images.

Each of them was also actively involved in choosing the settings in which they were photographed –spaces that captured the essence of the various facets of their daily lives. The first phase of the project was submitted as part of my Bachelor of Technology: Photography degree in the Applied Design Department of the School of Music, Art and Design.
